Don’t worry, Cup Cake. Read this!

Happy 65th Birthday! Welcome to the golden years and the realm of Medicare, the U.S. health insurance program comprising Parts A, B, C, and D. Parts A and B, also known as “Original” or “Traditional” Medicare, are guaranteed nationwide by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, ensuring consistent coverage across states. Parts C and D, introduced later, are entirely optional.

Wondering about eligibility? It’s straightforward — you qualify by paying taxes and reaching 65 (nice). Interestingly, some individuals may qualify earlier due to specific disabilities or medical conditions. As for enrollment, the 6-month window around your 65th birthday allows you to enroll three months before and three months after the big day. Enroll on the Social Security website or call for assistance.

Still in your working life? Maintain your employer-sponsored health insurance until retirement. Check with your Human Resources department to align Medicare with your company’s coverage and avoid misunderstandings or coverage changes. Cheers to navigating this new chapter of life!

Let’s explore Medicare Parts A and B, your Original Medicare! Medicare Part A, often called “hospital insurance,” covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and some home health care. It may also cover blood transfusions, your three meals a day during hospital visits, and hospice. Since 2023, there’s a $1,600 deductible, and like your employer-sponsored coverage, co-pays apply. No surprises — this is still the U.S. healthcare system!

Next up is Part B, entering stage left. Part B is your backstage pass, handling outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and more. It’s like the behind-the-scenes crew ensuring you stay healthy and catch potential issues before they steal the spotlight.

Starting in 2023, Medicare Part B comes with a monthly premium of $164.90. If your income is high, the premium might be even higher. There’s also an annual deductible of $226. Once met, Medicare Part B covers 80% of your medical service costs!

Be aware of these costs to plan for healthcare expenses, but don’t worry — there are plenty of resources and support for you along the way, including us. We’re here to root for you.
