So, you’ve signed up for a virtual fitness class — the excitement is real, but the uncertainty can be a bit overwhelming. And, honestly, asking the questions can feel silly:

Who’s the teacher? What’s the community like? Which platform will the class be on? And what are the general expectations?

These are all common questions, and the instructor should be ready to address them. Or, in an ideal world, it’s all laid out for you in a new student email. But hey, not everyone is empathizing with new students, or is aware of the learning curve.

To ensure an engaging and educational experience, I’ve gathered insights from my four years of taking virtual fitness classes, all from the comfort of my bedroom in front of a camera.

As a virtual fitness class enthusiast, here are some User Experience (UX) tips to make the most out of your experience:

  1. Introduce Yourself: Take a moment to introduce yourself. Creating a personal connection can enhance your overall experience.
  2. Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to reach out to the teacher. Let them know if it’s your first or hundredth virtual class. They’re there to help and guide you.
  3. Keep Your Camera On: While optional, keeping your camera on can foster a connection with the teacher and the community. It’s a great way to stay engaged.
  4. Connect with Others: Explore if there’s a virtual community or online channel where you can interact with fellow students. Building connections enhances the sense of community.
  5. Use Your Instructor’s Name: Addressing your instructor by name can strengthen your personal connection and make the class feel more tailored to you.
  6. Equip Yourself: Have a yoga mat or towel ready for practice. Set up your camera at the top of your mat for an optimal view of the instructor without straining your neck.
  7. Music Setup: Use a separate device for playing music. For instance, watch the class on your computer and play the playlist on your phone for a seamless experience. Or, if the teacher is playing music, just turn up the volume on your viewing device.
  8. Camera and Sound Options: Whether you prefer cameras on or off, or if you choose to play music, it’s all up to you. Consider using Airpods or durable headphones to ensure clear sound.
  9. Make Props Available: Keep relevant props available for your class. If you don’t have weights, use soup cans. If you need a yoga bolster, try a pillow.
  10. Invite Your Friends: We all know there’s nothing better than taking class side by side with a friend or family member. Ask others to join you…to split the price, better yet!

Remember, your virtual fitness experience is customizable, and these tips are here to help you tailor it to your preferences. Enjoy your class!
